The modern city of Ukiha was established on March 20, 2005, from the merger of the former town of absorbing the town of Yoshii (both from Ukiha District). As of 2003, the former ''town'' had an estimated population of 16,359 and a population density of 183.27 persons per km². The total area was 89.26 km². As of April 1, 2005, the new ''city'' has an estimated population of 33,177 and a population density of 139 persons per km².
